Lake Macquarie City Council has hailed their first Eco Angel clean up as a tremendous success, with the help of more than 100 Lake Macquarie City Scouts volunteers.
Council’s Manager Sustainability, Alice Howe, said the volunteer scouts put in an extraordinary effort to help clean up a part of Speers Point in Lake Macquarie City in July.
“We had more than 100 volunteer scouts collect 280 kilograms of waste in less than two hours.
“I am very thankful to all the volunteers who donated their time to make a difference to the community.
“Samples of the waste collected on the day show it is common household items such as food packaging, cans, glass and plastic bottles that are not being disposed of properly.”
The aim of the Eco Angel program is to provide an opportunity for residents of all ages and interests to help maintain clean and healthy public places throughout the City, reduce the levels of rubbish, and minimise the amount of legal dumping affecting the natural environment.
Dr Howe said the program supported community groups, schools, residents and businesses who are interested in cleaning up their favourite outdoor space in the city.
“The Eco Angel program encourages people to think about the impact of litter on our native animals, natural areas and water quality, and ways they can help to minimise it.”
The Eco Angel program has been rolling out across the City with another six registered clean ups through July and August.
