Not content with being a highly commended in the National Awards for Local Government, the Local Government Association of Tasmania’s CouncilConnect has just received another prestigious accolade. It was the State winner of the Australian Institute of Project Management Tasmanian Chapter announced in September 2004. The project will now be judged against the other state finalists at the AIPM National Conference in Perth.
Launched in 2003, CouncilConnect was the first Internet portal built for Local Government in Tasmania. The web site is a major breakthrough in the providing Local Government services and information to households and businesses, and is the culmination of three years of work by the Local Government Online Services project team.
Project Manager, Brian Oliver, said the site provides a single entry point for Tasmania’s Local Governments and offers online services that enable citizens to deal with their council.
“We did extensive research and consultation to understand what the community needed to create a highly usable web site would be easy to use for the Internet novice,” Brian Oliver said.
CouncilConnect will not replace existing council web sites as each Local Government is still able to maintain its own identity. In fact, councils have added value to their web sites through various aspects of the project, such as the provision of online and downloadable forms.
The project was funded through the Networking the Nation Local Government Fund.
