Isaac Regional Council has crushed and removed more than 150 illegally dumped car bodies from the Moranbah Common, with another 50 earmarked.
The Moranbah Common, located on the western side of the Goonyella Road, is freehold and reserve land popular for motorbike riders and families, drivers and dog owners.
Local Councillor Kelly Vea Vea said the efforts were in response to wide-felt support from the community who are fed–up with illegal dumpers.
“Illegal dumping has become a problem for our community and I’m really proud to see Moranbah standing up and taking ownership over the Common.
“Users of the area counted over 230 car bodies and started self-dragging them to a collection point, and sought support from Council.
“We are now removing these car bodies and other large refuse and scrapping them at Moranbah’s Resource Recovery Centre.”
Isaac Regional Council has also hosted a Community Clean-Up day and free barbeque lunch in the area.
Council’s main Facebook page also features a video of the dumped cars being crushed to show the community the positive progress being made.
“Moranbah clearly wants a tidy community and we need to tackle a culture–change on illegal dumping,” said Cr Vea Vea.
