Active Local Government

Winners of the 2000 Active Australia Awards proved that the post Olympic period needn’t signal the end of our enthusiasm to be active at Local Government level.

The Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald, presented Brisbane City Council with the Award in the Local Government category of the national Active Australia Awards at Parliament House, in recognition of its excellent community focussed sport and recreation programmes.

Highly commended in the Category were Calliope Shire Council, Queensland and Fairfield City Council, New South Wales.

The Awards recognise members of the Active Australia Local Government Network that best promoted and encouraged participation in sport and physical activity in the community and helped clubs and organisations in their area to meet Active Australia goals.

Brisbane City Council won the Award by implementing a diverse range of programmes to increase and enhance lifelong participation in sport and recreation.

These include women’s recreational programmes, programmes for children during school holidays, recreational walking programmes and a programme for Indigenous Australians.

Senator Macdonald said that as a key player in providing sport and recreation to communities throughout Australia, Local Government is an integral part of the Active Australia strategy.

“As Minister for Local Government I’m delighted to promote and support the aims of the Active Australia Local Government Network,” the Minister said.

The Active Australia Local Government Network is a national network of councils committed to improving the quality of the sport and physical activity opportunities available for their communities.

The Local Councils Resource Kit is provided free of charge to councils who register their interest in joining the Network.
