Revitalising Liverpool’s CBD

Extensive consultation with residents, business people, bus companies and road users has resulted in strong support for work to recommence on the ring road around Liverpool’s CBD.

“Transformation of the CBD’s southern end into a vibrant, attractive and secure inner city business and residential district will be accelerated with work recommencing on the Ring Road project later this year,” said Mayor George Paciullo.

Many busy urban retail centres find that through traffic can be a major disincentive to business and retail activity. Noise, traffic and pollution deter people from browsing or stopping for a chat or cup of coffee. This lessens the sense of community that a well planned city centre can provide.

Liverpool City Council plans to divert through traffic so it will be easier and more enjoyable for residents and visitors to access the CBD. This will create a safer shopping precinct, improve the travel time for through traffic, as well as reduce pollution.

A draft plan for the proposed ring road works and enhancements for the southern end of the CBD will go on public exhibition in April. Council will then make its final decision, with work to commence later this year.

CBD enhancement works include streetscaping, ensuring all new development is aesthetically pleasing, increased safety and security measures, and local traffic calming devices. Encouraging development in this section of the CBD as a cafe/restaurant precinct will further improve its economic sustainability.
