Warringah residents have their say

Residents of Sydney’s Warringah Council are to have their say in shaping the City’s Environmental Strategy. Acting Mayor Phil Colman said this would ensure the strategy ‘truly reflects community aspirations on a diverse range of environmental issues’.

“I am pleased that the preparation process will give everyone ample opportunity to have their say,” he said. “Already information brochures on the strategy have been mailed to key community, environment and business groups in the area.” These brochures include a reply paid form on which residents and others can outline their views.

In addition to the brochure distribution, Council will also hold a series of public workshops in April and May. Staff will prepare discussion papers on the five key environmental themes to be addressed by the strategy. Residents will be invited to submit written comments on these.

A draft of the proposed final strategy will then be placed on exhibition for comment before implementation. The strategy’s five key environmental themes will centre around the following.

  • Protection and preservation of biodiversity.
  • Effective water management to ensure creeks, lagoons and beaches provide healthy habitats for aquatic and marine life.
  • Enhancement of environmental quality through reduction in air and noise pollution.
  • Ensuring planning and development policies promote growth that is environmentally sustainable.
  • Promoting a social environment in which environmental goals are compatible.
