Hume takes out gold for community safety

Hume City Council has won the prestigious Gold Award for Excellence and Innovation at the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Awards staged by Crime Prevention Victoria, Department of Justice.

Hume took out the award with its ‘Integrated Health, Safety and Crime Prevention Framework’, a multi agency approach to dealing with issues of public health, safety and crime.

The award recognises Council’s work in promoting a coordinated approach to dealing with the social issues, such as homelessness, alcohol and drug abuse, problem gambling, road safety, injury prevention, public health and suicide prevention.

Fostering close partnerships with the Victorian Police, schools, business, community health and welfare organisations, Council established the ground breaking Hume Safe City Task Force.

Mayor Gary Jungwirth said that the award was an indication that Council was on the right track in dealing with social problems in the community.

“The Gold Award is a fantastic achievement and proof that Council’s framework is leading edge in its approach to dealing with community safety and crime prevention,” he said.

The Excellence Awards, presented last December, recognise the achievements of Victorian Local Government and community organisations for their work in community safety and crime prevention.

With twelve awards presented, Hume City Council had earlier won the category award, ‘Linking Safety and Public Health’.

The Minister Police and Emergency Services, Andre Haermeyer presented Council with the Gold Award and a cheque for $5,000.
