Road safety grants in WA

Community groups and Local Governments have been invited to apply for a new round of grants aimed at encouraging the development of new approaches and initiatives to improve road safety and reduce road trauma in Western Australia.

On behalf of the Road Safety Council of Western Australia, the Local Government Road Safety Council, as part of the RoadWise Program, is offering these direct grants of up to $5,000.

“WAMA, through its successful RoadWise program, is committed to making a difference to the State’s unacceptably high road trauma rate,” said Western Australia Municipal Association President, Councillor Ian Mickel.

RoadWise is a partnership between Local Government and the community to reduce road crashes and related trauma in Western Australia through the formation of community committees that address road safety issues at the local level.

“I encourage all community groups, including schools, service clubs and health organisations as well as Local Government Authorities to consider applying for the available grants,” Councillor Mickel said.

Applications will be assessed on the potential of the project to promote and encourage road safety within the community.

Applications close on 4 May 2001. Examples of projects that would be highly regarded include the following.

  • Awareness campaigns targeting speed, drink driving, restraint wearing or fatigue
  • Local Road Safety Audits
  • Senior Pedestrian Awareness Campaigns
  • Young Driver Awareness Campaigns
  • Drink Driving Awareness Campaigns
  • Development of promotional literature which targets specific issues relevant to the community.

Further information is available on the WAMA website at www.wama.wa.gov.au or from RoadWise Community Grants Project Officer, Claire Parker, telephone (08) 9213 2049.
