The 1999-2000 National Report on the operation of the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995 (the National Report) has now been released and incorporates a wide range of detailed information on Local Government in Australia.
The report was tabled by the Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator the Hon Ian Macdonald in Parliament in March.
The report details Local Government’s vital role, working in partnership with other spheres of Government to serve their communities. It includes information on the fair and equitable distribution of substantial Federal Government grants made available to all councils in Australia.
It also provides a national overview of councils’ work to promote sustainable development, achieve best practice and manage social and economic resources in all areas of Australia. The breadth of subjects illustrates the wide range of responsibilities that Local Government has across Australia.
