After many frustrating years and a fund raising struggle over the past two years, Nguiu Community Government Council proudly opened it swimming pool complex in April, with special guest, champion swimmer Leisel Jones. The cost of the swimming pool project has been a major challenge and is perhaps the most important facility project undertaken by Council and community for many years.
The opening of the community pool means that Nguiu’s Tiwi children can swim free of crocodiles and box jellyfish that infest the Island’s surrounding waters. The benefits of the pool will be enormous, including a significant improvement to the lifestyle and health of the Tiwi people.
With appropriate training, the aim is for the pool to be managed by Tiwi people within a few years. Community members have wholeheartedly supported the financing of this project by contributing $2 weekly in service fees. Donations and grants also assisted with the funding.
In the future, the pool complex will include shade structures for all pools, seating areas, additional lighting, exterior showers, car parks and possibly a manager’s on site residence.
