More than two dozen speakers will address Local Government professionals at the Best Value 2001 Conference to be held at the Carlton Crest Hotel in Melbourne from 16-17 August.

To be officially opened by the Victorian Minister for Local Government, Bob Cameron, the conference is expected to attract about 400 delegates who will explore the theme ‘2001: A Best Value Odyssey’. Former Labor politician, writer and broadcaster, Barry Jones, will give the keynote address. Named by the National Trust as one of Australia’s 100 living treasures, Barry will speak on the topic ‘The Ever Changing Ways of Government’.

Other key speakers include the following.

  • Former Deputy Prime Minister, Tim Fischer
  • David Henshaw, CEO, Liverpool City Council, and President of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, UK, speaking on ‘Customers, Technology and Best Value – Re- Engineering Local Government’
  • Professor Belinda Probert, Chair of the Best Value Commission
  • Leighton Wood, CEO, Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.

The following topics will be covered during the conference: Good Governance and Best Value; Getting Best Value from Competitive Neutrality; Triple Bottom Line – What does it really mean? Best Value – Views from South Australia; Effective Community Participation; Best Value Service Review; Innovation; and Partnerships. Conference organiser John De La Rue said the speakers will examine all aspects of the Best Value odyssey that Local Government professionals have covered since CCT.

“Anyone wanting to be at the cutting edge of Local Government management will have much to learn at Best Value 2001 where local and international professionals will share their experience of Best Value,” he said.
