The ultimate Green Power guide *

This month all Councils have the opportunity of discovering how your colleagues at Moreland City Council and Moree Shire Council have leveraged the deregulation of the electricity market to save both money and the environment. The Local Government Green Power Purchasing Guide is on offer free of charge from the National Green Power Program to assist Councils in understanding contestability and the opportunities it presents in purchasing clean, green renewable energy.

This guide comprehensively covers the main issues facing Councils interested in purchasing accredited Green Power. It includes securing a reasonable quote from your energy supplier or selling the concept to Council elected members, to detailed case studies of Councils that have successfully used contestability to reduce their energy costs. These Councils have seen huge savings in both energy costs and environmental benefits.

To ensure the guide covers the main issues Councils face in purchasing electricity, it was prepared by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) with the assistance of AMEIF and Cities for Climate Protection©, as well as consultation with Councils and electricity suppliers nationally.

As most informed Councils are aware, over 90% of Australia’s electricity is generated from burning fossil fuels, which leads to the emission of Co2, a key contributor to global warming and ultimately climate change.

Councils, not already purchasing Green Power, who are interested in accepting the challenge of reducing your contribution to global warming, while ensuring a cleaner and safer future for your residents, should not miss the opportunity of securing a copy of the Local Government Green Power Purchasing Guide.

For further information or a copy of the guide, for New South Wales Councils return the reply paid insert in this edition of Focus, email greenpower@seda.nsw.gov.au or visit www.seda.nsw.gov.au
