Fairfield’s industry website database

In August New South Wales Minister for Information Technology, Kim Yeadon, officially launched Fairfield City Council’s Industry Website Database. The database includes more than 8,600 local businesses and community groups.

“This database is the first of its kind in New South Wales and it means that it will now be much easier to do business in Fairfield,” said the Mayor, Councillor Robert Watkins.

The database, maintained and operated by Fairfield City Council, allows business people and the general public to search for suppliers of goods and services. Council adopted the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ ANZSIC (Australian and New Zealand Classification Standard Industrial Classification) framework for industry for the database.

Comparing Council data with ABS data helps to identify important information at a local level. This enables Council to track business and employment trends within the area.

Businesses on the database will be asked to respond to a ‘skills audit survey’ so that an Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO) can be recorded.

“We aim to record the ASCO skills sets of at least 3,000 businesses,” said John Allen, Fairfield City Council’s Economic Development Officer and the architect of the database. “These results will help Council identify which industry sectors are in decline in Fairfield City and which are doing well.”

“Council will be able to take this information into account in our day to day and long term planning for the City. Ultimately, it will help us assist our local businesses to grow and increase employment in our Local Government area,” he said.

The database also assists to effectively target and tailor services offered in the Fairfield area.
