Corrigin under the big lights

With the help of the Shire of Corrigan, and the local sports clubs, the transformation of a simple sports oval into a quality all purpose facility, has attracted many more sports and recreational events to the Shire. Corrigin, in Western Australia, with a population of 1,276 people, is a small rural community. Sport forms an integral part of the community’s social fibre.

“The football and hockey clubs have felt for some time that they would like to have a floodlighting system on the oval to enable the play of their respective sports at night,” said Corrigin Council Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Scott McKenzie.“At about the same time, Council bought 275 acres of land on the northern edge of town for a future subdivision,” he said.

“This land was made available to the groups to crop and raise funds. They have cropped the land for the last three years and have raised more than $50,000 to repay Council for the public contribution towards the project.”

There are 13 lights on each tower of the oval, with four towers in total. The floodlights provide 250 lux of the light, which is suitable for holding Western Australian Football League games.

The total cost of the installation was $165,000. Council received a $60,000 grant from the Department of Sports and Recreation in WA, covering approximately one third of the total cost. The Corrigin Oval is now capable of attracting and staging local, regional and State sport and recreational events.
