Councils across Queensland are preparing to join in the celebrations of Local Government Week 2002 to be held from 13 to 19 May. Coordinated by the Local Government Association of Queensland, the Week has proved its worth in helping Councils raise awareness of their role in the community.
LGAQ President, Councillor Noel Playford, said that Local Government Week provides a focus for Councils to promote the services they deliver and presents an ideal platform to encourage community participation in Council activities.
Councils are planning a range of exciting activities and displays to involve their local community. The week’s activities will include Council open days, school visits, community bike rides and tours of Council facilities.
A state wide colouring competition is being conducted throughout primary schools in the lead up to Local Government Week. Students are eligible to win some great prizes, and in the process, learn about the role Councils play in providing essential services to the community.
A Local Government Week web site at www.lgaq.asn.au has been created to inform Councils and the community of preparations taking place around the State. It lists resources and useful ideas for engaging people in the week’s activities.
