To find out the needs and wants of its youth and the best ways to meet them, Queensland’s Emerald Shire Council has assembled two youth Councils for 2002. The Emerald Youth Councils comprise a Junior Youth Council and a Senior Youth Council. There are around 13 members in each, representing different schools and a variety of social groups throughout the area. Their ages range from 11 to 25 years old.
Adult supporters include the Mayor of Emerald, Councillor Peter Maguire; Deputy Mayor, Councillor Peter Haylock; Councillor Kerry Hayes; Youth Worker, Matthew Sampson; and other youth related providers within the community.
“Our objectives are to enable young people to get involved in decision making within the community, as well as for young people to have access to services, facilities and information for personal development,” said Matthew Sampson. “It is encouraging to see the willingness and openness of the youth who want to be involved with the decision making processes within the Emerald Shire Council, supported by the leaders of our community.” To date the Emerald Youth Councils have been involved in a number of projects including the National Youth Week 2002 Festival, which was held on 13 April 2002.
“The Youth Councils helped shape and mould the National Youth Week 2002 celebrations, working with other youth, community groups and organisations,” Matthew Sampson said. “Without their efforts in organising, promoting and participation the festival would have been lost. Over 500 people attended with great enthusiasm and participation with a variety of activities and displays.”
The Youth Councils are presently assisting in preparations for the Emerald Shire Council Centenary Celebrations on 9 June. Their role is to organise and focus on the youth entertainment for the afternoon and promote the celebrations.
“The Youth Councils are looking forward to the rest of the year, making a difference with other projects and challenges to come,” he said.
