Recycled building materials will be used for important conservation work under a new agreement struck between the City of Geraldton and the Water and Rivers Commission.
Council’s Operations Engineer, Peter Karczub, said everyone benefits from this partnership, where the surplus construction materials from Council’s depot will be given to the local Commission office for use in its conservation projects, in exchange for work within the City. The depot has a growing stockpile of signposts, pine logs, wire netting, wire and iron. Most have been recovered from roads and Council recreation reserves after being damaged.
“While Council reuses what it can as part of its works program, some of the materials had a very slow turnover and were building up with little likelihood of use,” Peter Karczub said.
Under the agreement, goods up to the value of $5,000 annually will be donated in exchange for the Water and Rivers Commission conservation work within the Council area. It could include work done by employees, community groups or work for the dole programs under the Commission’s control and pulling weeds in parks or erecting fences on walkways.
Peter Karczub said that everyone was a winner under the arrangement, with Council receiving payment in kind for materials of little monetary value, and the Commission receiving much needed resources to continue its valuable conservation work throughout the Mid West region.
