Health promotion at Wadeye

Wadeye’s three Environmental Health Workers have achieved a significant amount through promoting awareness and establishing initiatives to assist the community in the care of its environment.

Known as the Kardu Numida Council Incorporated, Wadeye is an Aboriginal community located on the northern coast of the Northern Territory. It has a population of 2,500 people.

Although lacking in some basic amenities, the three Wadeye Environmental Health workers are working hard and achieving great things in promoting environmental health awareness.

“The Environmental Health Program has been implemented now for a little over two years, and in that time the Health Workers along with the community have achieved many things,” said Wadeye Environmental Health Worker, Noel Wallman.“Over 100 clothes lines have been erected and 60 houses now have a concrete slab under the outside tap to encourage children to wash daily.

“A Clean House competition has been running for 21 months with a washing machine as a prize.” Health promotion actions include a locally produced book about scabies, to assist in the reduction of scabies in the community; production of numerous signs and posters promoting health, displayed in the town’s store and clinic; and a PowerPoint presentation on CD Rom on health issues which is used at the local school.

As a result of their hard work and dedication, Wadeye has won two Northern Territory Tidy Towns Awards.
