South Australia’s City of Holdfast Bay has taken an integrated approach to establishing a number of strategies designed to assist with the appropriate management and protection of the area’s heritage assets. Its Heritage Initiatives Program has been in operation for approximately four years.
To date it has achieved a significant amount including the introduction of a comprehensive set of development assessment policies into Council’s development plan.
As part of the program the City has been divided into four historical zones. Some 212 local heritage places have also been identified. This will assist in their protection and provide guidelines for future developments in those areas. The strategies under the Heritage Initiatives Program include: heritage policy development; financial incentives; education, promotion and information; and community participation.
“The strategies include financial support from Council, discounts from local businesses, specialist heritage advice, raising community awareness and clear policy direction,” said Council’s Director Planning, Rob Donaldson. “The Annual Character Restoration Awards, which is part of the program, has proved to be a particularly popular initiative that not only raises awareness but also fosters community pride. Heritage Footpath Plaques, incorporating public art, are a feature of the streetscape that also promotes heritage and raises awareness.”
