Kingborough Ocean Esplanade project is taking shape

With stage one of the foreshore reconstruction of Ocean Esplanade at Blackmans Bay completed, Tasmania’s Kingborough Council has commenced the design for stages two and three. The aim of the project is to reduce vehicle speeds making the Ocean Esplanade a more pedestrian friendly area and safer for young children. Improving parking capacity and landscape enhancements works will also occur.

Following consultation with residents Council developed a plan for the reconstruction project, including a footpath along the property side of the road, and paths along the foreshore side for the entire length of the beach.

The foreshore path would provide access to the beach, as well as a recreational path to be linked to other paths along the foreshore. Construction of stage one commenced at the northern end of the beach.

“We have also incorporated a sloping ramp to provide easier access to the beach from the designated disabled parking areas on the roadway,” said Council’s Manager Technical Services, Steven Kaczmarski.

Stages two and three will be undertaken together. Some of Council’s key objectives in these stages include improving access, amenities and car parking at the southern end of the beach; building a mosaic footpath; closing off Blowhole Road; and constructing the reserve link to Ocean Esplanade.

One major feature likely to generate significant community interest is the suggestion to invite school children to design and install either the mosaic or clay tile footpath.
