South Australian Councils launch IT Group

In 2001 South Australian Local Government IT professionals established the South Australian Local Government Information Technology Group (LGIT). LGIT is a user group which regularly shares a broad range of IT issues facing Local Government. It aims to unite people who have a professional interest in IT matters including computer hardware (server, desktop, mobile, peripheral equipment), computer software, networking, online services and e-Business.

LGIT provides a forum for discussion of IT matters relevant to Local Government, while promoting and facilitating the interchange of information relevant to the group’s areas of interest. It encourages and supports cooperation and liaison with other relevant professional organisations and facilitates appropriate professional development and training for the group’s members.

One of its critical success factors has been the informal nature of the group. The LGIT Group is not an incorporated body and has no committee structure. Membership is free and open to any IT person in Local Government in South Australia. Most importantly the LGIT Group aims to meet the diverse needs of metropolitan and regional Councils, large and small.

Every three or four months, LGIT meetings are conducted as a full day workshop incorporating professional development and information sessions. Each workshop is sponsored by a commercial organisation that has the opportunity to give a presentation and distribute information about their organisation.

One of the major benefits of these workshops for members is the opportunity to network with IT colleagues from a variety of South Australian Councils as well as the sponsors of the workshops. If you are interested in joining the South Australian Local Government Information Technology Group or sponsoring an event, contact Richard Love, Manager Information Technology, at the City of Mitcham on (08) 8372 8888.
