The Kaurna Naming Project undertaken by the City of Adelaide is mapping the history of Kaurna occupation throughout Adelaide’s parklands. The Kaurna Naming Project first commenced in 1997.
Council believes that it provides an opportunity to recognise Adelaide’s Kaurna heritage through physical features of the city.
The project involves the naming of all unnamed city parklands and has to date named 23 parklands. As well as naming these parklands, Kaurna signs will be erected throughout the city.
Kaurna linguist experts were consulted regarding the accuracy of the Kaurna names on the original list that was developed in July 1997. As part of that consultation, issues such as spelling, grammar and the placement of Kaurna names were corrected.
A recent naming of the project was the naming of Victoria Square as Tarndanyangga, which translates to, the place of Red Kangaroo Dreaming.
The Kaurna Naming Project falls in line with Council’s Reconciliation Vision. This vision is guided by principles, namely participation, negotiation, communication and public awareness, service provision, cultural identity and heritage, and commemoration.
