Busy Ruthven Street is undergoing a major to revitalise and emphasise its role as the vibrant heart of Toowoomba.
Having commenced in February 2001, the Ruthven Street Revitalisation Project is part of the third stage in Toowoomba City Council’s physical revitalisation works in the city centre. Plans for the streetscape works of Ruthven Street were developed at an Opportunities Workshop in August 2000, attended by stakeholders. Its development was guided by the Ruthven Street Revitalisation Project Reference Group, comprising two elected members, Council officers and community, trade and property owner representatives.
“Prior to Council adopting the preferred concept plan for the project, further input from the community was obtained via newsletters and public displays,” said Council’s Manager Project Services, Greg Dinsey.
The final plan for the project sought to address issues such as modification of existing car parking, a strong garden city image, measures to improve pedestrian safety and comfort, as well as an extensive infrastructure upgrade. The project, currently in stage two of a three stage project, is scheduled to be fully completed next year. The total estimated cost is $7.57 million. Council was successful in acquiring a $2 million subsidy grant under the Queensland Government’s Regional Centres Program to part meet the costs.
“The Ruthven Street Revitalisation Project will give the street a much needed boost in the eyes of older, as well as more recent residents,” said Greg Dinsey. “The works will enhance Ruthven Street, increase its attraction and have positive flow on effects.”
