Support for East Timor

In a workshop held in conjunction with the National General Assembly , delegates heard how 35 Councils across Australia are taking part in a Friendship program to assist the people of East Timor rebuild their shattered country after their struggle for independence. Workshop Convenor, Councillor Rae Perry, from Darebin City Council in Victoria, said that Councils were assisting the people of East Timor in many different ways.

“Some are sponsoring English teachers, others are sending containers of clothing, bedding, washing powder, treadle sewing machines and even basic health care equipment,” Councillor Perry said. “Clean plastic sheeting, sterile razor blades and other very simple equipment is being sent to remote areas that lack even the most basic needs for childbirth.

“While much aid is being targeted at Dili, the Friendship program is helping channel support to Local Government areas across East Timor. We’re helping to fill in the gaps in other aid programs,” Councillor Perry said.

The Workshop was addressed by ALGA President, Councillor John Ross, and the East Timor Director of Local Administration and Development., Lino De Jesus Torrezao. Case studies were presented by Brisbane City Council, Leichhardt City Council, and Hume and Moreland City Council.
