An Integral part of the Esplanade Project is the distinctive public works of art scattered throughout the new parklands and lagoon area. The aim is to create a unique sense of place through public art in the form of paving designs, park furniture and stand alone artwork reflecting community identity and spirit.
Reflecting the interconnection between local cultures, surrounding environment and colourful qualities of Cairns, a number of the art works display the talents of artists.
Located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and surrounded by various National Parks and rainforest makes Cairns a place of environmental significance. The Great Barrier Reef provides an abundance of coral and reef life. Dolphins and unique fish are just part of the spectacular marine life flourishing in the area. The National Parks that surround Cairns are excellent examples of tropical rainforest and associated flora and fauna.
The reef and rainforests are a major attraction to Cairns. Artwork incorporated in the Cairns Esplanade Project clearly reflects this with the predominant themes of the art work including the following.
- ‘Rainforest meets the reef/beach’ with emphasis on the terrestrial marine environment, and environmentally sustainable development.
- Nautical theme, reflecting the significance of Cairns as a sailing port with access to the Great Barrier Reef.
- Tropical urban environment, incorporating a swimming lagoon, pedestrian walkways and recreational areas.
