Each year, Brisbane City Council gives away 80,000 free native plants on designated Green Days, held in local parks across the City.Green Days are part of Council’s Greening Brisbane Naturally program, aimed at providing practical help and information to people starting to develop their gardens.

Local Green Day activities include the following.

  • Community and environment groups’ displays.
  • Talks on topics, such as understanding your soil, fertilising native plants and establishing waterwise gardens, frog ponds and wildlife friendly gardens.
  • BYO community picnics.

Residents can also pick up free plant packs containing 18 native plants, grouped around themes such as waterwise and seaside vegetation, cottage garden, shade and hedge garden, rainforest, bird and butterfly attracting, or bush foods.

The last Green Day was held at Rocklea in Brisbane’s inner southern suburbs on 24 April.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Tim Quinn, said Green Day events contributed to Council’s vision for growing a clean and green Brisbane.

“By spreading the clean and green message in new and developing suburbs and older suburbs with low vegetation cover, we’re building a long term understanding of environmental issues,” said Councillor Quinn. “The native plant packs make a sensible start to any new garden.”
