More local awards

Local Councils have been invited to honour excellent teachers from schools in their localities through the ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTAs). This year, the NEiTA Foundation has decided to provide an additional 150 Local Merit Awards to teachers recognised for the merit of their teaching.

This is in addition to the 100 teachers who will be selected for State and Territory Awards, and subsequently considered for National Awards.

The Foundation will arrange with schools for Local Merit Medals to be presented in addition to Certificates of Nomination which record support from local school communities. Local Councils will be advised of the details and given an opportunity to become involved in supporting presentations of local ASG Merit Awards. School Councils, Committees of Management, Parent Committees and groups of parents and secondary students can nominate their choice of excellent teachers in three categories – Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary.

Nominations can also be made online through the Foundation’s web site at www.neita.com or by downloading a form through the “How to Nominate” section. Further information on nominations can be obtained by telephoning 1800 624 487.

NEiTA was established a decade ago by ASG, the Australian Scholarships Group, a national cooperative of parents supporting children’s education. To date more than 15,000 nominations of teachers have been received and over $1 million provided in grants, prizes and endowments to teachers and their schools.

Local Government’s connection with schools continues to grow in response to Federal and State education initiatives aimed at increasing contact between schools and their local communities.
