Tim Duncan is Cowra Shire Council’s award winning apprentice mechanic, having recently been presented with a load full of awards. Tim is employed by Central Western Group Apprentices to work for the West Central NSW Council.
He recently graduated with distinction as a Certificate III automotive heavy vehicle road transport mechanic. Tim also received certificates for outstanding achievement in construction and transport and the highest award in heavy vehicles. His teacher, Rob Rainbow, nominated Tim for these top honours because of his academic achievement, strong work ethic and outstanding work practice.
“Tim shines in every arena,” Rob Rainbow said. “He topped his class, then he was named top student out of 150 in the faculty, then Apprentice of the Year, which was determined by his employers and his TAFE assessment.”
Tim’s employment at Cowra Shire Council’s Mechanical Depot has given him experience in the service and repair of earth moving equipment, welding and cutting equipment, machining and air conditioning. Depot Plant Manager, John Apps, is justifiably proud of Council’s fine young mechanic.
“Tim deserves these awards for his outstanding application to his studies and his work,” he said. “It’s great to know opportunities exist in the west for young men and women to excel in their chosen career. I hope Tim will build on this achievement by pursuing further specialist automotive studies.”
Tim attained 18 distinctions and three credits in recent exams. His other awards include the following:
- Central West Group Apprentices Gordon Hawks Award 2003
- Central West Group Apprentices Cowra 2003 Apprentice of the Year
- Dubbo TAFE Apprentice of the Year 2003
- 2003 Barry Meck Memorial Award
- Outstanding Graduating Student Award in Transport 2003
- New South Wales Training Awards Apprentice of the Year 2003 in Automotive.
When asked what he enjoys most about his work, Tim said, “It’s very satisfying when a machine comes into the depot not working and you send it out in working order.”
