Land for a new central waste transfer station in Mackay is to be purchased by Council this financial year. The transfer station will form an integral part of the City’s new waste management strategy leading to the eventual closure of the Bayersville landfill site.
Mayor Julie Boyd said the new transfer station would provide better opportunities for Mackay residents to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
“The goal is to streamline the collection process so that recyclables and reusables are extracted cost effectively, reducing the amount of compacted waste being transported to landfill,” she said. The transfer station will be built in the 2004/05 financial year and is expected to be operational towards the end of 2005.
Three minor transfer stations and two greenwaste collection sites will also be established as part of the new waste management arrangements. As an interim measure to help reduce the amount of waste being taken to Bayersville, Council has established resource recovery services at its two existing transfer stations. Transfer station users are encouraged to separate waste including greenwaste.
Council has also budgeted to increase the amount spent on green waste recycling this year, and further support resource recovery operations at Bayersville by employing additional staff to achieve greater separation of waste at the landfill.
