Overcoming acid sulphate soils with new ViroSoil™ technology

The environmental impact of acid sulphate soils (ASS) can be devastating. Apart from killing plant life, they generate sulphuric acid that leaks into waterways, killing aquatic life. They can also corrode steel and concrete.

The problems associated with ASS are often generated by over development of lowland coastal areas. Up until now the standard practice for treating ASS has been to neutralise them with lime but this washes away, damaging plants and sometimes actually aiding in acid formation.

In a major breakthrough, ViroSoil™ Technology – developed by Virotec – provides a durable, long lasting solution for ASS. ViroSoil™ Technology neutralises acidity, binds heavy metals, enhances nutrient retention, and promotes the retention of water and vigorous plant growth.

ViroSoil™ Technology also outperforms and outlasts lime because it cannot be leached from soil by rainwater or groundwater. This cost effective technology has already been applied to golf courses, dredged marine sediment, prawn farm ponds and farmland – and has many more applications.
