Embracing tomorrow’s prosperity together

A highly successful conference, titled Embracing Tomorrow’s Prosperity, was held at Tom Price in Western Australia’s Ashburton Shire on 28 May 2004. The theme of the conference was how the community can best work with Federal and State Governments, Government agencies, Indigenous communities, the resource and business sectors to manage the impact and meet the opportunities presented by the rapid expansion now occurring in the iron ore market.

Over 150 delegates packed the room and were interested to hear from a diversity of presenters. Speakers reinforced the opportunities that exist and emphasised the need to start planning and consultation with Government agencies and Pilbara Iron as soon as possible, especially with regard to housing and land tenure.

A special guest speaker, Kristy McNabb, a local high school student, outlined a range of youth related issues and a vision for the future.

“Community events like this are very important and Council now has a very strong base to go forward with its strategic planning,” said Shire President, Councillor Greg Musgrave. “A stronger partnership between the business sector and community provides greater prosperity with positive social and economic outcomes, including employment.”

Feedback from delegates indicates that the conference was highly productive, innovative and provided an exciting outlook for the future of Tom Price. Conference papers will be available from www.ashburton.wa.gov.au
