Victoria’s largest and most vibrant municipality

The City of Casey is Victoria’s largest municipality and one of Australia’s fastest growing. Located 35 kilometres south east of Melbourne, Casey is 400 square kilometres in size and has five distinct geographic regions stretching from the foothills of the Dandenongs to the coastal villages of Western Port.

The name ‘Casey’ stems from the area’s links with the late Lord Richard Gavin Gardiner Casey, a resident of Berwick. Lord Casey was Australia’s longest serving Foreign Minister and the 16th Governor General of Australia.

The City of Casey will celebrate its tenth birthday on 15 December 2004.

When the municipalities of Berwick and Cranbourne amalgamated to form the City of Casey in 1994, the city had a combined population of 145,000. In the short space of ten years, Casey has become Victoria’s largest and most vibrant municipality with a population nearing 215,000. Casey’s population is expected to peak at around 320,000 within the next couple of decades.

Delivering the massive service and infrastructure needs of a city growing at a rate of 65 families a week provides enormous opportunities, but also creates significant challenges. Casey is addressing these challenges by taking a long term strategic focus, through strong partnerships and advocacy, and with innovation.

This FOCUS supplement highlights how Casey is working innovatively toward a sustainable, prosperous and vibrant future.
