Penrith supports work and family research

Penrith residents have become a part of a vital Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) research project on women, men, work and family. In February, Penrith City Council hosted HREOC focus groups led by Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Pru Goward, to ask local residents, both men and women, what they think about balancing paid work and caring for a family.

Penrith Mayor, Councillor Jackie Greenow, encouraged residents to take part in this important research project.

“It gave residents a unique opportunity to express their opinions and share their experiences while helping work towards making a positive difference in the workplace,” she said.

HREOC believes its research findings will encourage changes that will support both men and women in managing their paid work and caring responsibilities.

“Council is a workplace that is committed to creating a family friendly working environment and hosting these focus groups is an important part of that commitment,” Councillor Greenow said. “It is dedicated to creating local jobs, flexible working hours, and first class childcare services so that employees can better balance their work commitments and family obligations.”

Couples with at least one child under 12 years of age, and one partner in full time work were invited to become part of this project.
