In response to community demand, Victoria’s Hobsons Bay City Council has established a risk action plan for a cypress tree plantation in Sadler Reserve, Williamstown.
Following an independent assessment by a tree specialist and a risk assessment by Council, the action plan aims to extend the longevity of the plantation by identifying appropriate methods to manage the trees. Consultation with local residents was a key component in developing the plan.
“Following the collapse of two cypress trees during the freak storm in February, residents called on Council to assess the safety of the trees,” said Councillor Angela Altair. “Council understands that there are risks associated with having large trees growing close to homes. The risk action plan outlines how Council can best manage these trees to ensure the safety of residents and park users.”
Councillor Altair said that Council has also identified that cypress trees are ageing and a planting plan is being prepared to ensure that all trees will be replaced at an appropriate time.
“The cypress plantation provides a wonderful focal point for the neighbourhood abutting Sadler Reserve, contributing to the overall character of the nearby foreshore,” she said. “Through the risk action plan, Council will ensure that the cypress plantation is secured for the enjoyment of future generations, while not adversely affecting homes adjacent to the reserve.”
Council commenced the first round of pruning works in June. Other major works include the removal of over mature trees, replacement tree planting and protecting trees from damage associated with possums. A Conservation Management Plan is also being implemented at two reserves located opposite Sadler Reserve.
