Alice Springs’ Biggest Bedroom for Bedtime Storytime was held at Alice Springs Public Library in January. Some 22 children, five dads, seven mums and library mascot, Booka, gathered round and listened to stories read by Children’s Youth Services Librarian, John Chisholm.
Patrons were instructed to turn up in their pyjamas and prizes were given for Best Bedtime Outfit and Best Family Bedtime Theme.
Library Manager, Denise Senior, said Bedtime Storytime is a safe and fun children’s activity the whole family can enjoy.
“Bedtime Storytime is for children six years or younger, but mums, dads, big brothers and sisters were all welcome to join in the fun,” she said. “The children’s area was transformed into a large bedroom, with a local furniture store lending a double bed and two mattresses.
The event was a great success and it should become a permanent fixture of the school holiday timetable.” John Chisholm said reading to children from an early age is known to be a very important part of a child’s literacy and language development.
“Bedtime Storytime is great fun for the kids and it’s also a great way for parents to learn skills to help them feel more comfortable reading to their children,” he said. The readings were followed by hot Milo and biscuits.
