“Industry leaders believe Local Government is a relatively untapped resource for mediators offering alternative dispute resolution (ADR),” said Steve Gibbeson, Training Manager for the Australian Commercial Disputes Centre (ACDC). In fact, experts believe Local Government is a ‘sleeping giant’ when its potential to employ ADR in resolving both external and internal disputes is examined.”
The 45 industry leaders, whose comments were raised at a recent forum hosted by ACDC, also noted successful results achieved by local Councils that have used ADR to resolve planning disputes.
“Those wishing to learn and practise mediation between disputing parties in Local Government can’t afford to miss our next training course,” Steve Gibbeson said.
From 28–30 March, ACDC will conduct a specialist mediation course designed for the Local Government field. The course will be especially useful for general managers, mayors, councillors and council staff as well as architects, planners and builders.
ACDC, a not for profit organisation since 1986, has access to the most experienced dispute resolution professionals in the country.
“We have previously run courses attended by those in Local Government, obtaining excellent feedback from participants,” he said. “The course counts towards ACDC Mediation Accreditation, a highly regarded qualification for mediators. We are also running a Conflict Resolution/Dispute Avoidance course on 22 March to help participants prepare for the mediation course.”
