The City of Playford

The City of Playford is the most northern Local Government area of metropolitan Adelaide. Formed in May 1997 as a result of an amalgamation of the former City of Elizabeth and the District Council of Munno Para, the City is one of South Australia’s largest Councils covering a large and diverse area of 364 square kilometres of urban and rural areas.

Currently the City of Playford has 346 staff and a dedicated team of more than 400 volunteers who contribute greatly to the community in a range of areas.

Naming of the City

The name of the City recognises the role that Sir Thomas Playford had in the development of the area. Sir Thomas Playford was South Australia’s Premier from 1938-1965. During this time he was largely responsible for the industrialisation of the State and made a major contribution to establishing Elizabeth and the older urban areas of Munno Para.

Playford – a diverse community

Culturally diverse, the City of Playford is home to more than 70,600 people and has much to offer its residents, investors and individuals seeking affordable housing, recreation, education, employment and social activities. It is also proud to be home to the successful Central District Football Club (the Bulldogs).

The City provides a range of rural, urban and industrial land uses, while supporting the growth of horticulture, manufacturing, technology, retail and expanding residential development.

Revitalisation of the retail sector within the City has been significant with the redevelopment of the Elizabeth Regional Centre and the Munno Para Shopping City.

In addition, the City is the base for the production of the Holden motor vehicle and a wide range of other manufacturing businesses as well as being a leader in horticulture with the Virginia horticultural industry, boasting some of the best produce in the world.
