Destinations Rockdale sets out a 20 year vision

A marina, jetty, central park, sporting facilities, civic administration centre, canal and traffic solutions to a busy boulevard strip are all part of Rockdale City Council’s 20 year vision.

Destinations Rockdale is a comprehensive plan to revitalise Rockdale town centre, Brighton Le Sands and the road that links these two suburbs together, Bay Street. The vision represents how Rockdale, located in south Sydney, could be more attractive for residents and visitors, improve accessibility and environment, generate jobs and make the Rockdale to Brighton Le Sands corridor more sustainable.

An important aspect of the project will be the development of waterside boulevard, The Grand Parade.

The strip is notoriously known for traffic congestion conflicting with pedestrian movement and local retail environments.

Council plans to develop The Grand Parade back to a public transport hub as it was in the early 1900s.

A Mayoral Taskgroup working with consultants put the plan together over a four month period. “This is an exciting vision for the 21st Century,” said former Rockdale Mayor and Taskgroup member, Councillor Shaoquett Moselmane. “Some community facilities, such as a central library and new civic precinct, have been promised for the past 30 years. It’s about time we start delivering, and this plan is the first step in that direction.

“The Mayoral Taskgroup was of the view that you cannot let time stand still, you either move forward or you’ll be left behind. If we don’t start improving our community assets they will eventually become run down and people will move away.

“It is now time to embark on the process of renewal and reinvigoration. It’s time to return our City to its previous role as a premier destination, where people came from across Sydney to enjoy our wonderful facilities and natural assets, including Lady Robinsons Beach and the waters of Botany Bay.”

The plan is outlined in a comprehensive brochure and DVD, which were sent to more than 22,000 residents. Residents were then able to provide feedback at community meetings held late in 2005.

Council will consider adopting all, some or part of the vision as the building blocks for its new City wide Local Environment Plan.
