Recognising that some of its elected members have not had the benefit of growing up in the computer age where computer literacy is now taken for granted, and have not been required to use computers as part of their employment, has lead to the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) to organise a series of full day workshops.
Titled, Using Computers to Communicate Effectively in Local Government, the workshops are designed to assist Councillors to take full advantage of all the benefits technology can deliver. These workshops will be conducted later this month in three locations – Burnie, Launceston and Hobart.
Whether Councillors are new to computers or have some experience, qualified instructors have been engaged by LGAT to demystify much of the jargon associated with computer use.
As well as assisting attendees to be better informed about Local Government issues, they will be able to communicate more effectively with their fellow Councillors, staff and, most importantly, their constituents. Moreover they will save valuable time.
The workshops will cover:
- how to connect to the Internet
- accessing useful Local Government related web resources
- understanding PDF and ZIP files
- sending and receiving emails and managing attachments
- gaining familiarity with software programs, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
