Show me the money!

The City of Geraldton, together with the Shire of Greenough and the Department of Sport and Recreation, recently hosted a series of workshops aimed at assisting sporting groups to secure money for their club.

Geraldton CEO, Gary Brennan, said if there is one thing every sporting club could do with more of, it would have to be money.

“Show Me The Money was a free workshop designed to inform sporting clubs and groups of a number of grants and funding opportunities and give them tips on how to secure more money for their club,” he said.

Geraldton’s Sport and Recreation Club Development Officer, Konrad Seidl, conducted the workshops with assistance from presenters Yvonne Lovedee, Geraldton’s Community Development Officer; and Adam Murszewski, the Department of Sport and Recreation’s Regional Officer. They shared information on grants and from where they are available, such as the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), Sport and Recreation Community Grants Scheme, the Sports Lottery Account – Country Package and Skywest Airlines Country Sport Development Program.
The Western Australian Grants Directory was also promoted, as was the Australian Government’s Grantslink.

Konrad Seidl said participants worked together through one grant as an example.

“We worked though a process of tips to cover while completing a grant,” he said. “These included obtaining a grant early, following instructions, describing the necessity, detailing methods, describing outcomes, consulting with the Grant Officer and other persons within the club, being on time and collecting information and receipts for a quality acquittal. We also assisted clubs in preparing sponsorship proposals.  This can be a long process and ideas in preparation can be similar to the preparation of a grant.”

Konrad Seidl said the turnout for the workshops was extremely positive.

“Participants included Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers and other club Committee members from a broad spectrum of sports, such as swimming, AFL, soccer, BMX riding, cycling, surfing, badminton, touch rugby, surf lifesaving, hockey and pigeon racing,” he said.

Gary Brennan said the workshops were a great initiative to help out sporting clubs.

“We place significant value on the contributions all volunteers make in assisting local communities,” he said. “Every sporting club that took advantage of this invitation has hopefully realised the short and long term benefits which could flow onto their club and community.”
