Bendigo showcases expertise

City of Greater Bendigo Design Engineer, Leigh Oliver, has showcased his expertise across the nation. Leigh was invited by software companies CADApps (Computer Aided Drafting Design Applications) Australia and AutoDesk to present and demonstrate his engineering designs at technical workshops across Australia.

One of Leigh’s designs, currently under construction, is the Barnard Street section of the VicRoads inner box project. The inner box is a network of roads that provide a ‘ring route’ around Bendigo CBD. His other projects have included the design of a new recycling centre at the Eaglehawk Landfill and Pratt’s Park Road in East Bendigo, which is about to be constructed to service the food manufacturing precinct.

Leigh designs his projects using a software package comprising AutoCAD Civil3D and ARD (Advanced Road Design), which is provided by CADApps Australia. He has visited Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart to demonstrate his expertise in using the software to other engineers.

Director of CADApps, Andrew English, said Leigh is a great ambassador for the City of Greater Bendigo.

“Leigh’s well prepared presentation provided an overview of Bendigo and its surrounds and left no-one in any doubt that the City of Greater Bendigo’s engineering office is well run, efficient and productive,” he said. “He is an excellent presenter who is passionate about his work. His technical and design skills with the software are highly regarded by his design peers at Council engineering offices around Australia.”

City of Greater Bendigo CEO, John McLean, said in addition to being recognised by CADApps, Leigh’s efforts were also acknowledged when he took out the City of Greater Bendigo’s recent individual staff recognition award.

“Our staff awards celebrate achievement and quality and Leigh was a very deserving winner,” John McLean said. “Not only has he completed some fantastic design work, but he has also showcased Greater Bendigo to his peers across the nation.

“He is definitely a rising star in our organisation.”

Leigh Oliver joined the City of Greater Bendigo in early 2005 after previously working with a local surveying company and an irrigation design company in northern Victoria. He said his past employment in different fields has given him a great deal of design experience, which appears to be paying off for the City of Greater Bendigo.

“It has been really great to have the opportunity to travel throughout Australia showcasing Bendigo and presenting my design,” Leigh Oliver said. “I have gained valuable knowledge speaking with colleagues from around Australia and it has been very rewarding to hear positive feedback from other Councils about the City of Greater Bendigo’s design techniques. I am grateful to Council for allowing me the time to travel away and present at national forums and also for their ongoing support, with further training allowing me to increase my skills.”
