National convention for HR and people managers*

The Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) National Convention is Australia’s flagship event for HR and people managers. With the theme “People Leading Business”, the 2008 National Convention will be staged at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The two day program on 21 and 22 May is packed with high profile business leaders, authors, HR thought leaders and academics, speaking on the issues that matter to the profession.

Optional Extension masterclasses are
scheduled for Tuesday 20 and Friday 23 May.
Register at www.convention.ahri.com.au before 18 April to take advantage of early bird savings. Keynote speakers include Lynda Gratton, Professor of Management Practice at the London Business School. Her presentation is titled, “Hot spots: igniting creative energy in teams”.

Lynda Gratton is one of the world’s most influential thinkers in HR strategy and a world authority on people in organisations. Her most recent book, Hot Spots, draws on work with leading organisations to investigate the times when people’s thinking is clearer, and when ideas and insights combine to create eureka moments. Dr Gratton will explore the organisational and operational processes that help ignite hot spots, share the principles for enabling them to emerge, and focus on HR’s role in this new way of working.

Chief Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Mick Keelty, will
speak on AFP workforce planning for international deployments. Counter terrorism remains the top priority of the AFP with considerable resources devoted to the investigation and prevention of terrorism. However, involving employees in situations where there is the distinct possibility of emotional, physical and mental harm – even death – presents big people challenges for an organisation. Commissioner Keelty will discuss how preparing employees for unknown and potentially dangerous situations is but one part of the AFP strategy in providing security in the Australasian region.

The AHRI convention exhibition is the largest HR trade show in Australia. Some 150 exhibitors will offer delegates and visitors the latest ideas and organisational solutions currently available.
