IPWEA/RTA Local Government Road Safety Strategy

Conducting a random breath test is Senior Constable Matthew Brooks with the Lachlan Highway Patrol.

The IPWEA/RTA Local Government Road Safety Strategy works to raise the priority of road safety in
Local Government. This is achieved through support for council road safety strategic planning, the administration of funding for local road safety initiatives and through the presentation of annual Local Government Excellence in Road Safety Awards, to recognise outstanding council achievements.

The IPWEA/RTA strategy is one element of the NSW Local Government Road Safety Program
conducted as part of Road Safety 2010, a framework for increasing road safety in NSW.

Local Government Excellence in Road Safety Awards

The 2008 Local Government Excellence in Road Safety Awards attracted 21 nominations from some
43 Councils across NSW. The awards, sponsored by the Motor Accidents Authority, were presented at the Annual Conference of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) – NSW Division, in Sydney on Monday 19 May 2008. For further information, please contact the Road Safety Project Manager on (02) 8267 3012.

Catch Ya Later Condo – an alternative transport option for rural communities

Catch Ya Later Condo – an alternative transport option for rural communities, has won this year’s Motor Accident Authority Local Government Excellence in Road Safety Award.

The Catch Ya Later Condo project addressed the issue of drink driving in Condobolin. The project provided transport alternatives for people who would normally drive to and home from licensed venues, as well as incentives to avoid drink driving. The project was combined with local enhanced police enforcement for drink driving. Extensive community involvement and commitment by many stakeholders, including the Condoblin Liquor Accord, were demonstrated. Catch Ya Later Condo reported a reduction of drink driving offences following implementation, as part of the program’s evaluation of road safety benefits.

Catch Ya Later Condo addressed a local road safety issue though innovative and sound methods. It incorporated excellent community and stakeholder involvement and followed best practice principles. The project evaluation included an analysis of recorded drink driving offences and surveys of patrons in participating venues. The success of Catch Ya Later Condo has encouraged Liquor Accords in other areas to adopt this approach.

Congratulations to Melanie Suitor and the Lachlan Shire Council.
