Sustainability issues on a day to day basis

Climate change, drought, waste management, recycling, resource efficiency and reporting obligations are just a few of the significant issues facing councils, industry and business today.

The pending National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) framework and the upcoming Australian Emissions Trading Scheme pose an unprecedented opportunity or threat for councils.

As of 1 July 2008, mandatory greenhouse reporting will be required of many councils should they trigger the threshold. The reporting obligations are complex and will carry significant penalties for those who fail to comply.

Greenhouse reporting is a precursor to an emissions trading scheme that is likely to be introduced in Australia in 2010. While the precise nature of the trading scheme is yet to be determined, we do know that it will pose significant costs on all energy supplies.

Councils, businesses and industry who fail to take action now may face significant economic risks, while those who act now will be at an economic advantage.
