Thinking outside the square

Creator of the exhibition, Warren Thomas (left), and AlburyCity Mayor, Stuart Baker.

An exhibition at the LibraryMuseum in AlburyCity is emphasising the benefits of reducing, reusing and recycling. Box World is a miniature city made almost entirely out of recycled materials.

The creator of Box World, Warren Thomas, is an environmentalist and model maker from Tasmania who believes in the value of the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.

Box World has been over 12 years in the making and was originally inspired by a travelling display by Lego Land. Not wanting to purchase more plastic materials, and being unable to afford Lego blocks at the time, Warren Thomas started building using recycled products he found around the home.

Box World now covers an area approximately 200 square metres, similar to the size of a tennis court. There are over
900 individual buildings, representing most things you would expect to find in a typical Australian city. The tallest skyscraper is over five metres high and there is a football stadium, a soccer ground, swimming pool, shops and factories.

In creating Box World, Warren has focused on the recycling products and packaging he found around the home. Materials used include cardboard, polystyrene, cans, bottles, milk cartons, straws and ice cream sticks.

The ferris wheel is made from a BMX bike wheel, the circus big top was made from a striped carry bag and the spire on the cathedral is made from a tomato sauce bottle.

The exhibition will be on display at AlburyCity until 13 July.
