Toowoomba rolls out skate park

Toowoomba Regional Council in the Darling Downs region of Queensland is in the process of installing a new skate park. Council has purchased a range of streetscape skating equipment from Skateramps Australia to develop the park, which comprises a combination of different heights, humps, and jumps.

The skate park will be located at Factory Dam reserve in the centre of Millmerran.

Council’s Youth Development Officer, Paula Bellerby, said the park will be suitable for skateboards, rollerblades and BMX bikes.

“The Millmerran Youth Council came up with the idea for a skate park prior to amalgamations,” she said. “The initiative is part of a wider project to rejuvenate the entire Factory Dam area and make it more of a community focal point.

“The Youth Council drew up the proposal for the skate park, raising part of the money themselves. Council then applied for funding for the remaining amount under the Queensland Government’s Q150 Community Funding Program. The program encourages all Queensland communities to undertake activities and projects that celebrate and commemorate Queensland’s 150th anniversary in a way that reflects the unique culture, heritage and aspirations of their own community.”

Paula Bellerby said the equipment can be pulled apart, rearranged if necessary and stored if the area needs to be used for another purpose.

“Council is aware that young people often go through fads, so we purchased this portable equipment on the off chance that if, down the track, use wears off, we will be able to reduce the skate park area by rearranging and storing some equipment,” she said. “This will allow us to use the rest of the space as a basketball court or other sporting surface.”

Managing Director of Skateramps Australia, Jim Campbell, is assisting Toowoomba with the installation of the equipment and expects the park to be complete by the end of this month.

Jim has been making skate ramps for 17 years and has shipped them all over Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Borneo and to the Christmas Islands. He believes councils choose Skateramps because of its competitive pricing and assistance with installation.
