Logan City Council’s Information Services Branch has been recognised for excellence in staff software and computer training at the LearnX Asia Pacific 2008 E-Learning and Training Awards. The branch won the Best New Employee Orientation Training Program and Best Online Learning Solution categories in the competition, which is run by Training Australia magazine.
Logan City Council Governance, Finance and Water Committee Chairperson, Councillor Luke Smith, said that technology plays an important part in the effective running of Council.
“From day to day operations, including our libraries and animal registrations, to financial records and planning infrastructure for the future, computers are used to record information,” he said. “Like all levels of government, Local Government uses a range of programs to record information that may not be used in the private sector. New staff can sometimes find this overwhelming when they first start working at Council.
“Our Information Services Branch has recognised the need for IT training, both when employees start at Council as well as ongoing training in the form of refresher courses. As such, Council developed what are now award winning programs to help staff serve the community.”
The orientation training takes one and a half days to complete and involves practical training with a tutor and reference manuals for later use.
Logan also offers a flexible e-learning training program for specialist programs, which can be used from home via a DVD, or through its employee intranet. The self paced nature of this training method can increase an employee’s understanding of programs.
