Indoor stadium attracts international users

In 2002, Hornsby recognised the need for a multi purpose sports stadium to be built in the Shire. The preferred site was an old brick works site located at Thornleigh.

In 2003, Council called for Expressions of Interest for the management of the Brickpit Indoor Sports Stadium. Council received four submissions, and made the decision to operate the stadium in house, setting up a business unit in the Aquatic and Recreation Facilities Branch.

The Brickpit Stadium was constructed at a cost of $4.9 million, and was officially opened in October 2003. It comprises four courts marked for basketball, netball or volleyball. Other sports, including badminton, can be played on the sprung floor. A mezzanine viewing area forms part of the stadium. This area can be used for functions associated with the sports being played.

The stadium was an instant success with 100 per cent occupancy from 4.00 pm till 11.00 pm Monday to Friday evenings, and 75 per cent occupancy on the weekends. The building is also able to be used for exhibitions, and other functions, although the demand for its sports facilities has been such that this use has not eventuated.

In 2007/08 the stadium had 95 permanent user groups and has a waiting list of other users wanting to use the stadium.

The stadium has drawn visitors from all around the State and has attracted international user groups.

The Brickpit was the first of Council’s assets that was aligned to a specific asset management plan. Any operating surplus is allocated to a specific reserve, from which is drawn the necessary funds to keep the building in tip top condition, so that it will never be a financial liability on Council.

Due to the success of the stadium and the proven demand for indoor sporting facilities in the area, Council is investigating the possibilities of extending the Brickpit Stadium to include an additional two courts.
