In their citation when awarding Auburn Council the Local Government Section Winner, the trustees of the AR Bluett Award stated, “The Auburn Local Government Area is one of the most disadvantaged in New South Wales and the Council has responded to the critical role that Local Government can play in the social and cultural development of its local community. The council has demonstrated its ability to work in partnership with all sectors of the community to achieve better outcomes for Auburn through progressive and inclusive leadership.”
Auburn Council was also recognised for “dealing with local issues in an innovative and efficient manner.”
“Considerable progress has been made in recent years, dealing with the economic challenges of the area, cultural and social diversity and managing with limited resources. The Council has responded with improved teamwork, capacity building, staff recruitment, capacity building and a focus on good governance.”
The AR Bluett Memorial Award is regarded as the highest acknowledgement a Council can obtain. “I am so proud and thrilled that we have won this award for achieving excellence in Local Government,” said Mayor Irene Simms. “This is an award which not only serves as recognition for the hard work of staff and Councillors at Auburn Council, but it is also an award for our community. A community that is very diverse presents challenges in terms of rapid growth and many varying needs, but also a community that makes our Local Government
area one of the most interesting and
rewarding areas in Sydney to work for.”
Auburn Council will continue to work hard for its community and celebrate and utilise its rich cultural assets and resources while also working in collaboration with local groups to address the cultural and social needs of the community.
