Focus on Logan’s talented musicians

The cultural diversity and musical talent of Logan City Council’s youth have culminated in an innovative community project.

Logan’s population of 250,000 people comprises more than 160 cultures. Around 50 per cent of its residents are aged 30 years or younger.

The Community Voices project uses the powerful medium of music to unite the Logan community as well as help promote an understanding between sections of the city.

Participants have been involved in creating, composing, practising and performing a series of songs, which highlight the strengths of the people of Logan. The end product is the inspiring and powerful CD, ‘Eyes are Windows’, which reflects the strengths, resilience, richness, diversity and uniqueness of the Logan community.

The CD was launched in December at a musical instrument store in Logan, with many of the musicians featured on the CD performing.

“The evening was a celebration of the artists and their achievements,” said Logan Mayor, Pam Parker. “It was a great evening to not only reward the hard work of these musicians, but also raise awareness of just what amazing talent we have here in Logan City.”

Council is selling the CD for $10 at various outlets around the City, including customer service centres, libraries, the Art Gallery and the Migrant Access Centre. The songs are also available on iTunes.

Profits raised go back into producing more CDs and assisting the music group.

Council has also made bulk purchases available to community groups, schools and not for profit organisations for fundraising. They can bulk purchase the CDs at the discounted cost of $3 each, then sell them for $10 keeping the profits.

Mayor Parker said sales are going extremely well, with the first batch of 500 already sold and a further 1,000 now on the shelf.
